Reader question:
How do I make my car safer so I can get high performance discount car insurance?
Rachel
Thank you for asking, Rachel.
There are several types of safety devices that you can get on your high performance car, not only to make it safer for you, but so yo can get discount car insurance rates. Here’s a list of some of the top safety practices to help you and help your wallet.
- Air bags.
Air bags are a pretty simple and long standing kind of safety feature, but they are certainly useful. Made to deploy whenever you get into a mild or bad car accident, but not when it’s something small like a rear end bump, these little bags saved over two thousand lives in car insurance accidents in the year of 2006., and almost three thousand. If you have air bags in your vehicle, then you are eleven percent less likely to be injured in a car insurance accident. Add a seatbelt to that, and it jumps up to fourteen percent less likely.
- Seat belts.
Which brings us to the seat belt, the annoying best friend of any car driver. These little things are the most valuable protectors against car insurance accident injuries, and regular use can score you a good discount car insurance rate. If you wear your seat belt, then you are almost half as likely to get injured if you get into a car insurance accident. In 2006, the estimate is that the use of seat belts was responsible for fifteen thousand saved lives in car insurance accidents.
- Car seats.
These seats, made for children up to the age of five, are extremely important in protecting the lives of little kids in car insurance accidents, but they must be used properly. That means that a seat for an infant must be in the back seat and it must also be rear facing. No child safety seat should be in the front seat, and in fact, no kid at all should be sitting in shotgun until they are at least twelve years old. Over the past two decades, more than seven thousand kids have survived a car insurance accident thanks to the restraint of a child safety seat, and over four hundred in the last year alone.
- Helmets.
If you are driving a high performance motorcycle, then a helmet is a must. These have a huge impact on your chances of survival in a car insurance accident. If you are wearing your helmet while driving a motorcycle, then you have a forty percent less chance of dying from a car insurance accident. Last year, almost two thousand lives were saved thanks to helmet use, and if they had been used more consistently, that could have been three thousand.
- Stability control.
Different car manufacturers call this by different names, but having electronic stability control equipped on your car will get you great discount car insurance rates. While no figures have been gathered as of yet, the NHTSA predicts that the application of electronic stability control will be responsible for saving ten thousand lives every year. By 2012 you’ll have to have it anyway, so get it now while it’s worth the best discount.
