When my brother was in the military, I found out what members of the armed forces really make. It isn’t much, which surprised me, and I realize that if he had had a car at the time, he certainly would have had trouble managing to pay for military auto insurance. On the bright side, as a member of the armed forces you have somewhat less amount of financial obligations if you are able to live on a military base and eat there and so on, but living on a military salary often demands the utmost of frugality, especially when it comes to auto insurance premiums. So what can a service member do about getting a lower car insurance premium?

It’s very important to get your car insurance policy with a company that understands, first of all. Many companies that cater to members of the armed forces also employ retired members of the military who are able to specialize in handling situations of members who move from base to base often or who need some way to cover their automobile while they are deployed.

These types of companies are especially easy to find if you are living on a base, because even if the company does not offer a military discount on a national scale, normally if it is around a base it will lower the premium of a member of the armed forces in some manner. However, there are plenty of companies that have a good record with the military, such as GEICO.

Even if you are a retired military person you might still be able to get the benefit of a discount for being a military member. Along with providing discounts, many car insurance companies will also be able to alter a car insurance policy for those soldiers who are deployed over seas. For example, you might be able to get your liability coverage temporarily taken off and only have to pay for comprehensive coverage at a reduced price. If you are seriously considering doing this, then you should try checking what the laws are on your state for cars being partially insured while out of use, and what the exceptions are for members of the military.
