Reader question:

What is personal injury protection?

Ingrid

Thank you for your question, Ingrid.

Personal injury protection is a type of car insurance coverage that takes car of your medical expenses, among other things, when you are in an accident that is caused by your own actions. If you get into an accident for which another driver was at fault, then you will not have to use your personal injury protection coverage in most states, because you will be covered by the other driver’s personal injury liability, which extends to cover any person injured in a collision which that driver caused.

However, there are several states which operate under no fault car insurance laws, and in these states personal injury protection coverage is required. No fault laws in these states have gone a long way towards reducing car insurance prices by keeping the claims more within the car insurance company of each driver and diminishing the amount that the no fault driver has to deal with the other driver’s car insurance company. However, in some cases, such as New York, these decreases in price have backfired due to the higher possibilities of car insurance fraud thanks to no fault car insurance laws.

  • Personal injury protection covers several things, such as
  • Medical bills.
  • Lost wages.
  • Funeral expenses.

The amount of coverage that you receive from your personal injury protection car insurance coverage naturally depends on just how much you are willing to pay. For example, at the lowest premium price, you might get replacement for wage loss for about a month, but if you choose a higher end premium price, you might get wage loss coverage for several years. It all depends on how much you think you will need, how much you can pay, and how well you would be able to function after a severe car insurance accident.
