A slew of thefts that have taken place in my area recently really brought home the need for many people to have full auto insurance coverage for their vehicle, as well as gap insurance if they are still paying a car off. Over the course of two weeks, two cars in our apartment complex and the neighborhood next door were stolen, along with tires from eight different cars. We live in a pretty good area, and although we don’t live in the most expensive apartment complex, we have never had to worry about anything like that before. This just goes to show that even if you don’t live in the most dangerous, high theft area, you can still be a victim to car theft and vandalism. I’ve been a lot more careful about locking my cars even during the day since then, and I take in the stereo that we had installed on one of the cars in every night (it pops out) because it isn’t covered under our car insurance.

Cutting the car insurance coverage for your vehicle is definitely one of the most quick and effortless ways to save, but you have to think about what you might lose. Full car insurance coverage includes comprehensive, collision, and liability coverage. Obviously you can’t get rid of the liability, but I think that if you have a car that is worth a decent amount of money and yet you still want to cut coverage, the first thing that should go is the collision insurance. You can avoid being at fault for a car insurance accident by driving safely, keeping distance from the cars in front of you, and taking a defensive driving course. However, even locking and parking in bright, busy areas is not a surefire way to avoid car theft, especially if you own a muscle car.
