Picking the right car insurance company is important because like many things, the value of a car insurance policy grows with time. While your cheap car insurance premium may not stay that way forever because car insurance rates rise every year, you can still get the best value from the same company. If you get with the right company from the beginning, then you can stick with them for years and benefit from the offers that you can only get after being a consistent customer.

I do advise people to shop around for other car insurance companies anytime something big happens in their life, such as when they get a speeding ticket or when they add a new spouse to their car insurance policy. Some car insurance companies treat certain changes better than others, and while sticking with one company could mean more of the same, changing to another one could mean savings.

However, if you are intending to look around at other car insurance companies, you should think long and hard before making the final decision to change companies. Think, for example, about a couple of good money savers on your cheap car insurance premium.

  • Being a long time customer.

Most car insurance companies will give benefits of cheap rates and discounts to people who have been with them for several years. These discounts can often be pretty good, around ten percent typically, which is a big saving when added to your other discounts.

  • Staying accident free.

Normally if you don’t get into a car accident for three years, then you can get a discount from your car insurance company.

If you change car insurance companies, then you might get a lower rate in the short term, but you are giving up these great discounts above, at least for a few years. Going with a new car insurance company means starting all over again.
