Reader question:

As an over 60 car insurance driver, how can I stay safe on the road?

Victor

That’s a great question, Victor.

I think the best strategy is to simply be realistic. You are going to be good in terms of your car insurance premium at least until you are sixty five, because between the ages of fifty five and sixty five are the best years in terms of people making the least claims and getting the lowest car insurance rates. However, once you are sixty five and need an over 60 car insurance policy, it’s as if you jumped from a low risk category to a high risk category overnight, and through no fault of your own. Your new over 60 car insurance rates will be some of the highest that you have had since you were a teenager (you know…after inflation), so it will take greater effort for you to keep them down.

First of all, you need to minimize your ability to get into a car insurance accident. My grandma limits herself to driving during the day, but it is a myth that this actually reduces the number of accidents. Of the fifteen percent of car insurance accidents that involved someone over the age of sixty five, eighty percent of those took place during the day. However, if your vision is such that you see poorly in the dark, then it is definitely a good step to stop driving at night and limit your commute to daytime hours.

Once you reach the age of 79 in Texas, you have to make more effort just to keep your license because the state has strict requirements. You can no longer renew your license online, but instead have to go to the office to get it.

A study was done recently showing that most of the car insurance accident that involve over 60 car insurance policy holders occured at an intersection, usually one with a stop sign instead of a stoplight. The percentage of accidents here was forty percent, and most of these accidents happened because the driver did not yield to the other cars. This does also occur at places with stoplights, but it is less likely, and there could be reductions in these accidents due to an increase of using the green arrow on the stop light to indicate that it’s good to go for a left turn.

I say all this because I think it is important for an older driver, especially one who is concerned about saving money on his or her high performance car insurance premium, to take extra care when at intersections because these are the most dangerous areas for a car insurance accident to take place. I can testify personally that I see crazies at the intersection near my apartment every day, and some people who think that the stop sign is meant for the back of their car and not the front. If you want to save money on over 60 car insurance, then the first thing that you can do is be safe.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.
