Additional car insurance coverage

I’m really big on the concept of saving money because I like to think that if I save enough, somewhere down the line I’ll get to the point where I have a big enough cushion that I won’t have to worry about finances at all. I like to say why should you spend a few cents when you can save a few dollars? I think this state of mine is extremely helpful when you are getting car insurance coverage, simply because it is difficult to determine at times whether it is better to cut coverage and save than it is to add coverage and protect. However, there are individual situations that will always affect what your best option is. Still, there are several types of additional coverage which I like to have with my car insurance coverage, even when I don’t have things such as comprehensive and collision.

  • Rental car coverage.

I’ve been without a vehicle many times before, so I know how difficult it is to survive without having a car to drive to work in. I used to walk an hour and a half to work every day when my first car broke down and I didn’t have the money to fix it, so rental car coverage is a great help when it comes to getting into a car accident. It costs less to have this coverage over a year of car insurance premiums than it would to rent a car for a single day.

  • Custom car insurance coverage.

This is of special interest to people with fast cars because we tend to have a little bit of extra on our vehicles. Custom car insurance coverage is good for people who have made additions to their cars, such as adding a souped up engine or a thousand dollar sound system, or just a set of rims. This makes your car a higher risk for theft, though, so not all car insurance companies offer this coverage.

  • DDS

No, not a licensed dentist. DDS in this case stands or dismemberment, death, and sight (the loss of it, that is). It’s scary to think that these things might happen to you in a car accident, but even so it helps to be covered because any of these things might change the course of your life and month’s worth of lost wages provided by personal injury protection aren’t going to cover you. A lot of times PIP does cover death and funeral expenses, though, so check your policy to make sure that you aren’t wasting money on overlapping coverage.

  • Road service.

This might not be necessary for a lot of people in the time of OnStar and other GPS systems that often come with road service for emergencies. However, if you don’t have such equipment on your car and don’t get it through a car club, then it’s a good idea to add it on, especially if you live or do a lot of driving in a high crime area or in an area where you would have to go a long, long way to find some help.
